WAEC grading system explained: A1 to F9 and what counts as a credit
WAEC grades run from A1 (75-100) to F9 (below 40). A1 to C6 are credits; most Nigerian universities want five credits including English and Mathematics.
WAEC (WASSCE) grades each subject on a nine-point scale:
- A1: 75 to 100 (Excellent)
- B2: 70 to 74 (Very good)
- B3: 65 to 69 (Good)
- C4: 60 to 64 (Credit)
- C5: 55 to 59 (Credit)
- C6: 50 to 54 (Credit)
- D7: 45 to 49 (Pass)
- E8: 40 to 44 (Pass)
- F9: below 40 (Fail)
What counts for admission
A1 to C6 are credit passes. D7 and E8 are passes but not credits, and universities do not accept them for the core subjects of a course.
Most Nigerian university courses ask for five credits, including English Language and Mathematics, in subjects related to the course. These can usually come from at most two sittings, and many schools accept WAEC and NECO results combined. Some courses ask for more, for example particular grades in science subjects, so always check your course.
Screening points are different
Some universities turn your O'Level grades into points (for example, more points for A1 than for C6) when they calculate admission aggregates. Those points are the university's own method, not part of WAEC's grading, and each school sets its own.
Check which O'Level subjects and grades your course needs on AdmitMe, and practise WAEC objective questions by subject.
