How to pass WAEC (WASSCE) with credits: a subject-by-subject plan

Most courses need five credits (C6 or better) including English and Mathematics. Plan for the objective paper, the theory paper and practicals, and you can get them in one sitting.

For university admission, the target is clear: at least five credits (C6 or better), including English Language and Mathematics, in subjects related to your course. Plan backwards from that.

Know how each subject is examined

Most WAEC subjects have an objective paper (multiple choice, four options) and a theory or essay paper. Science subjects such as Physics, Chemistry and Biology also have a practical paper. Your grade combines them, so you cannot pass on objectives alone.

English Language

  • Practise essay and letter writing to time; follow the word count and format asked.
  • Do comprehension and summary passages regularly; answer in your own words where asked.
  • Do not ignore the oral (test of orals) section.

Mathematics

  • Show your working in the theory paper. Method earns marks even when the final answer is wrong.
  • Cover the whole syllabus; questions are spread across topics.
  • Practise with your calculator and mathematical set so you are quick on the day.

Sciences

  • Practise practicals: drawing, labelling, recording readings and tables. Many candidates lose easy marks here.
  • Learn the standard definitions and units.

How to study

1. Use WAEC past questions to learn the style, not to memorise answers. 2. Time yourself on full papers. 3. Read the instructions on each paper: how many questions to answer, and from which sections. 4. Revise weak topics first, then keep strong ones fresh.

On the day

Answer the number of questions asked. Extra answers do not earn extra marks, and missing ones cost you.

Stay away from 'expo' and 'runs'. They are scams, and malpractice can cancel your result.
