JAMB subject combinations for popular courses: Medicine, Law, Engineering, Nursing and more
Your four UTME subjects must match your course. Here are the typical JAMB subject combinations for the most popular courses, and how to confirm yours.
Use of English is compulsory for every UTME candidate. Your other three subjects depend on the course you choose, and choosing the wrong ones can make you ineligible however high you score.
Typical combinations
- Medicine and Surgery: English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Nursing: English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Pharmacy: English, Biology, Chemistry, Physics
- Microbiology: English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics or Mathematics
- Mechanical, Electrical or Civil Engineering: English, Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry
- Computer Science: English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry or Biology (some schools accept other science subjects)
- Accounting: English, Mathematics, Economics, and one other subject
- Economics: English, Mathematics, Economics, and one other subject
- Law: English, Literature in English, Government or History, and one other Arts or Social Science subject
- Mass Communication: English, Literature in English, and two other Arts or Social Science subjects (often Government)
These are typical. Universities can add their own rules, and some differ on the fourth subject.
How to confirm yours
1. Check the JAMB brochure for your course and your chosen university on JAMB's portal before you register. It lists the exact UTME subjects and any special O'Level requirements for each school. 2. Read your university's own admission page, because some schools add requirements. 3. Make sure your O'Level credits match too. Most courses need five credits including English and Mathematics, in subjects related to the course.
AdmitMe's course pages show the typical combination and O'Level requirements for each course, and which universities offer it.
